It has to be the most inspiring thing I have ever witnessed. 100’s of people pushing themselves beyond the limit of what we think about to be achievable. This fete of pure endurance truly tends to make us question what we ourselves could possibly accomplish. The dilemma with witnessing something like the ironman is that at the same time as inspiring us, it also makes us really feel really insignificant.
The ironman has a great history with the notion initial getting conceived in 1977 at a prize giving for a five man relay operating race in Hawaii. It was sparked by a debate on who had been the fitter athletes, runners or swimmers. During the debate a Navy Commander by the name of Collins pointed out that he had in fact read in a prominent sports magazine that cyclists have the highest oxygen saturation of any athlete and as a result maybe cyclists are the fittest of the bunch.
It was then recommended that the debate be settled by having a race which would combine all three disciplines thereby permitting the best athlete to emerge. There were already three individual competitions taking location on the island. The Waikiki swim(2.4 miles), the Around- Oahu cycle race (115 miles) and the Honolulu marathon (26 miles) Based on this the distances for the proposed race had been set, the only adjust getting the cycle was lowered to 113miles so that they could start at Waikiki and finish at the Aloha tower. With smiles all round Collins announced that the first to finish would be known as the iron man.
Fifteen brave men set out on the morning of the race, and 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds later on the 18th of February 1978 Gordon Haller emerged as the 1st Iron man. In reality it is mentioned that the runner up, a navy seal by the name of John Dunbar lost the race simply because he ran out of water and his support resorted to giving him beer in order to hydrate.
The very subsequent year with little to no advertising and marketing at all there were 50 entrants for the race but due to unforeseen the weather the race had to be postponed by a day and in the finish only 15 entrants were at the beginning line. In order to attempt and draw much more entrants Collins decided to make it a relay race but during the 79 occasion a sports writer wrote a ten page story which sparked enormous interest and the following year Collins had hundreds of inquiries from potential participants.
A actual milestone for the event was in 1982 when a female student competing in the race was top the race into the finish line when she collapsed from dehydration and fatigue just yards from the tape. She proceeded to crawl across the finish only to collapse once again on the other side. This was filmed and broadcast all around the planet and at the same time mantra of “just finishing is a victory†was born.
Correct pleasure and victory is exceeding your personal expectations. Often we ourselves are not aware of what we are capable of till we achieve it. Inspire greatness by getting great.
